It was quite an honor to meet former Jets QB Glenn Foley this past Sunday, Nov. 1st, at the Jets/Miami game. He was tailgating with old friends we happened to be interviewing, and he was kind enough to come out and talk to us.
In a lot of ways, Glenn falls under my definition of the Jets Curse. At least, in my mind anyway.
I remember watching him play for Boston College, leading them to a great victory over Notre Dame. Then in 1994 the Jets drafted him and then in 95' he came into a game against the Eagles to replace the languishing starting quarterback, and Foley was amazing. 19 completions on 29 attempts. I thought, "This is it! This guy's the real deal! He can move, he can throw, plays smart! We've got our franchise quarterback!"
And BAM. He gets nailed to the turf and is out for the season. CURSE. But in 1997 he comes back to replace the starting QB mid-game against the Patriots, down 12-3, and he led a comeback to beat the Patriots 24-19. "Foley completed 17 of 23 passes (including 14 in a row) for 200 yards in driving the Jets to three touchdowns."
Then coach Bill Parcells decides to make Foley the starter. I think, "Whoo-hoo! This guy's back! He's healthy and ready to lead us to the promised land!"
Then BAM. Two games into the season the O-line lets him get FLATTENED and he's out again. I mean, COME ON what are the odds? What rotten luck?? For Foley AND for Jet Nation.
So Foley, I remember you fondly and as I said in our interview, the pain you felt leaving the field those days was felt far and wide. I thank you for giving us good memories and great Jet moments we'll not forget. And if there's any story that proves this team, organization, and fans are cursed, this is it.
But a pleasure meeting you and I wish you all the best. We'll be back this season, and maybe we can get a follow-up interview with commentary on how the J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets are doing.
Until next time.
Mark J. Williamson
